<Definition> A theory of decision-making holding that people evaluate future gains and losses not against total wealth, as expected utility theory assumes (the traditional economic view that people judge choices by multiplying the probability of an outcome by the satisfaction it would bring, then acting on that expected value), but as changes from a reference point — and that they feel a loss more strongly than a gain of the same size. It was put forward in 1979, based on patterns of choice observed repeatedly in experiments. [1]
